Let’s Recap!
It was an adventurous trip out to Birdsville to say the least and included a very wet and muddy overnight in Betoota), we were stoked to have made it out to the Big Red Bash for its 10th Anniversary event.
After a delayed roll in due to the wet weather, we were given the all clear to head in during the afternoon of Monday 3rd July, and were thankfully set up for the night before sunset. We wandered through the plaza, and each decided on our own dinner spot… and boy were we impressed!
Each of these vendors endured a lengthy trek to get out here, battled the same weather conditions we did and put on fantastic food options for thousands of bashers every day, and they did it with great energy and enthusiasm.
The next day, we kicked off the morning with a bacon and egg breakfast cooked at our site, set up our marquee, flags and merchandise and got right into it!
Whether it was chatting to you about your amazing adventures and laps of Australia, explaining that we really do cover you anywhere you’re legally allowed to go in Australia or that we can cover your lengthy list of mods for what they’re really worth, we had a fantastic three days getting to know so many of you.
But talking insurance and handing out free beanies wasn’t all that we travelled out to the Big Red Bash for… on the Tuesday, we were blown away watching the Big Blue Day come together, and seeing bashers break the world record for the largest human image of a country – what a sight!
That afternoon, we got to enjoy music from John Williamson, Troy Cassar-Daley, Pierce Brothers, The Waifs, Hoodoo Guru’s and Furnace & The Fundamentals. Being camped on our stall site meant that we got to enjoy a campfire and kick back to the festival tunes of an evening – winding down after a big day in the sun.
Wednesday morning came and we made sure to catch a glimpse of the Drags and Fashions in the Desert race – watching so many eager faces sprint down Big Red and through the campsite was a true spectacle. Even some furry friends got involved in the dress up festivities.
Later that afternoon we took a bit of time away from the stand and enjoyed a camel ride along the base of the Big Red sand dune. The team at Oakfield Ranch do an amazing job hosting thousands of eager camel-riders throughout the duration of the bash, their next destination being the Bedourie Camel Races!
After our camel ride we made walk up to the top of the Big Red dune and watched the sunset over the desert. Queensland Police closed access to the desert due to prior days' flooding.
On Wednesday night we were treated to performances by Jack Jones, The Chantoozies, Ross Wilson, Shane Howard, Kate Ceberano, The Angels and the headline Icehouse!
The next morning was our final morning of festivities for the Big Red Bash before an early roll out on Friday, so we made sure to kick it off with an early morning climb up Big Red to watch sunrise over Bashville. If you were hoping for more than just a stunning sunrise, don’t fret – there is a daily bagpipe performance at sunrise and free yoga sessions to get your body ready for the day.
Thursday morning was something we had all been looking forward to… Nutbush Record Attempt Day! After a delicious bacon and egg breakfast roll from Moo Baa Cluck, we queued up to join the other 5,800+ bashers who were also taking part in the event.
Hats off to the event organisers at the Royal Flying Doctors Service – Queensland Section. They did a fantastic job of coordinating the world record attempt.
The actual dance was SO FUN! Being surrounded by 5,800+ other nutbushers who are just as eager to be taking part as you created a great atmosphere, and I can say on behalf of the whole Club 4X4 Insurance team it definitely made for a trip highlight.
And for those who haven’t caught the news yet, the record-breaking attempt was successful!
Our final night of music saw Caitlyn Shadbolt & Melanie Dyer, Wendy Matthews & Grace Knight, Dragon, Pete Murray, Chocolate Starfish and Human Nature take to the stage. A fantastic close to a fantastic event.
Rolling up our swags on Friday morning was a bittersweet one… whilst we were glad to be heading back to a real shower, it meant drawing a close to Big Red Bash – a truly memorable experience for all of us. It was fantastic to chat with so many of you about the adventures that you have, and the starry night sky in the outback is truly spectacular.
