To ensure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons, preparation and safety are key. Below, we unpack 5 safety considerations to keep in mind before hitting the road to Cape York with a caravan in tow.

1. Get Your Vehicles Serviced Before You Leave

Cape York is no place for mechanical surprises. The corrugated roads, 4WD tracks, and unpredictable creek crossings can put serious strain on your vehicle and caravan. That’s why it's crucial to schedule a thorough service for both vehicles before your trip begins.

During your service, ask your mechanic to check essential elements such as brake pads, suspension, drivetrain, filters, and towing components. Ensure your caravan's bearings, brakes, and chassis are inspected as well.

It’s also a good idea to carry basic spare parts and tools, including fan belts, air filters, hoses, fluids and fuses, just in case repairs are needed while you're miles away from a mechanic. We also travelled with two spare shock absorbers and a spare tyre for both the vehicle and caravan.

Pro tip: Always double-check your towing setup. Is your tow hitch secure? Is your caravan properly balanced with weight distributed evenly? The road to Cape York is not forgiving, so over-prepare rather than under-plan.

2. Monitor and Adjust Your Tyre Pressures Daily

The roads headed north are as varied as the landscapes you’ll encounter—dusty dirt tracks, bitumen, gravel, and endless corrugations. Managing your tyre pressures daily is the secret to avoiding punctures, improving safety, and keeping your ride as comfortable as possible.

Why it matters:

  • Correctly adjusted tyre pressures reduce wear and tear on your tyres while improving traction on loose surfaces like sand and dirt.
  • They also ensure a smoother ride over corrugations and help prevent punctures.

General guidelines:

  • Reduce tyre pressures by around 25%-30% below highway levels when driving on corrugated dirt roads.
  • And don’t forget about your caravan tyres! They need the same attention as your vehicle’s tyres—after all, they’re carrying your home on wheels.

Essential gear: Invest in a quality air compressor and an accurate tyre pressure gauge so you can check and adjust pressures as needed.

3. Drive With Your Headlights On

Though this may seem simple, driving with your headlights on during the day in Cape York can be a life-saver. The roads in the region are incredibly dusty, and can often be narrow and busy with other 4WDs and road trains. Visibility can quickly become a problem, particularly in low light or extremely dusty conditions.

Benefits of driving with headlights on:

  • It makes your vehicle more visible to oncoming traffic—even through clouds of dust.
  • Reduces the likelihood of head-on collisions or accidents when overtaking.

Make it a habit to set your headlights to low beam during the day on all unsealed roads. This small act maximises safety not just for you, but also for your fellow road trippers.

Safety First: Always give way to oncoming vehicles on narrow tracks and use extra caution in areas where vision is reduced by overhanging trees or dust clouds.

4. Use UHF Radio to Stay Connected

A UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio is an essential tool for staying safe on the roads no matter where you are travelling, but especially in remote areas with intense driving conditions.

Why you need UHF:

  • UHF radios allow open communication with other drivers in the area, especially in remote conditions.
  • Road trains and large vehicles often use them to announce their movements, particularly when navigating tight bends or blind corners. Listening in helps you coordinate overtakes or give way when needed.
  • They're critical for emergency communication when mobile phones won’t work.

Tips for effective UHF use:

  • Set your UHF radio to the road channel in the region (Channel 40 is the most common).
  • Keep communication short and direct.
  • Practice radio etiquette to ensure all relevant drivers get clear, concise information.

Pro tip: Don’t rely solely on UHF for emergencies. Carry a personal locator beacon (PLB), Starlink or satellite phone for worst-case scenarios.

5. Perform Daily Vehicle Checks – Under Bonnet, Under Body

Cape York isn’t kind to poorly maintained vehicles, and even the best-prepared setups need attention every day. Performing a quick daily inspection ensures you catch small issues—broken straps, loose bolts, tyre damage—before they turn into big problems.

Here’s a quick checklist for your daily vehicle and caravan inspections:

  • Check tyre pressures and look for punctures or damage.
  • Inspect your towing hitch, safety chains, and caravan brakes.
  • Look for loose bolts, screws, or external signs of damage to your caravan or vehicle.
  • Clear your headlights, taillights, and mirrors of any dust or debris for better visibility.
  • Check under your vehicle for leaks or damage before hitting the road again.

These checks take just a few minutes and can save you hours (or days) of headaches if something goes wrong, not to mention thousands of dollars!

Bonus Tip: Keep your caravan stocked with water, fuel, and non-perishable food supplies. You never know when you might be delayed by road conditions or weather!
